As rag doll is a game object which is rigged up using joints which can use physics. They will be connected together using in our case hinge joints. To create a unity 2d ragdoll we will start off with a basic stick man character. However you can use ragdoll physics for some many different things in your games, like rope and other items which need to move or swing around an axis. Also they can make for some really interested game play if you want to create a game where there is grappling and swinging. Below is a bit of graphics I did in inkscape to make the main joints we will need for our rag doll. Open up unity and create a new 2d project called unity 2d rag doll tutorial. We need to now quickly split our image up into individual sprites. Click on slice make sure you have automatic selected and click slice to auto slice your character into multiple sprites. Head, torso, leftbicep, leftforearm, rightbicep, rightforearm, leftthigh, leftcalf, rightthight, rightcalf. Then select all the parts of your character so that we can resize our character to the right size which fits in our scene. We first want to add a floor so our character wont fall through our game world. So a forearm would be connected to a bicep and a calve connected to a thigh. A thigh and bicep as well as the head would be connected to the torso. Start with connecting your biceps to your torso, the head to the torso and the thighs to the torso. To do that click on each of the biceps, thighs and head and in the section where you need to select the rigidbody select your torso rigidbody. When you click on a piece you want to align them you will see the hinge point in this image below. You should end up with a rag doll character which looks something like this. Then your player should be able to fall to the ground and you might end up with something like this. We need to define some angular limits our character has joints which are too flexible which will just make our character end up being just a big blob. So you want to set limits which make sense, for example our head cannot move 360 degrees it can only move 45 degrees in the left and right direction so we need to define an angular limit. We going to give them a limit as well so that our player cant split like now.
